Before & After: Transforming a Dated Kitchen into a Functional Dream in Bend Oregon

When my client first reached out, they had just relocated from Seattle to Bend, Oregon and were ready for a new chapter. Recently retired, they bought a home centrally located in downtown Bend. While the kitchen, was technically updated and functional, it felt cold and sterile. With all the grays and sharp edges, it lacked soul. After years of Seattle’s cloudy palette, my clients were craving something warmer—something that felt alive.

That’s where we started below.

Together, we reimagined their kitchen from a place of pure function to a space that invites connection. One that still honors clean lines and modern sensibility—but with a heartbeat.

Start with the kitchen nook.

For the kitchen nook we warmed it up in all the right ways by painting the walls in soft, creamy Sherwin-Williams Alabaster for a cozy, welcoming glow. Rebuilt the bench in beautiful teak for natural warmth and longevity, then topped it with a fresh custom cushion. Finally, we swapped out the lighting for pendants that gently define the space and add just the right touch of charm.

We warmed things up with teak cabinetry.
I knew immediately that rich wood tones would ground the space and bring in the organic warmth they were missing. We landed on lighter wood floors and beautifully grained teak, earthy but elevated. The cabinetry became the anchor, setting the tone for everything else.

We played with light.
Cool-toned overheads were swapped for soft, ambient lighting. Think: a subtle glow under the cabinets, dimmable fixtures over the island, and natural light that reflects gently off the stone backsplash. Now the kitchen feels warm in the morning and golden at night—a far cry from its former starkness.

We introduced natural contrast.
To keep things feeling fresh and modern, we chose a natural stone, leathered slab for the countertops and backsplash that offered depth, subtle veining, and just enough contrast against the teak. It’s the kind of material that changes throughout the day—catching the light differently as the hours pass.

The result? A space that still feels sleek and contemporary, but now it sings.
There’s soul here now. A sense of place. And it’s not just a kitchen anymore—it’s a showstopper, the heart of the home.

Projects like this remind me that a renovation isn’t just about surface-level beauty—it’s about tuning into what a client really needs to feel at home.

A huge thank you to the incredibly talented Jill Rosell of @aroundthebendphotos for capturing this transformation so beautifully. Her eye for warmth and texture matched the project perfectly.
