How To Style Your Bed

A wise person once said: If you want to change the world, START OFF BY MAKING YOUR BED.

I truly believe that if you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day.

It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.

By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life DO matter.

This little pep talk was an excerpt from ADMIRAL McRAVEN's UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS COMMENCEMENT SPEECH

Now I’ll be taking over and showing you how to create a visually captivating and personalized sleeping space.

From building a foundation to layering textures that make your bed stand out.

Let's get your bedroom looking better with a stylish centerpiece you'll love to come home to.

Setting Up the Foundation

The foundation of any well-styled bed starts with the fitted sheet. Investing in high-quality materials like breathable cotton or crisp linen ensures both comfort and aesthetics.

Cotton offers a classic, soft feel, while linen adds a touch of rustic texture and coolness. Select neutral colors for versatility or inject a pop of personality with subtle patterns.

If you want to go beyond the basics, consider a mattress topper. Not only do they provide added comfort and support, but they can also influence your desired bed height. A thicker topper creates a platform effect, ideal for layering and showcasing your duvet, while a thinner one maintains a more streamlined look.

Finally, introduce visual interest with a blanket or quilt at the foot of the bed. I like to go with a chunky knit throw for cozy vibes, a lightweight linen blanket for a relaxed look, or a patterned quilt for a touch of personality.

Choosing Your Duvet: The Main Event

Now onto the star of the show: the duvet. Its thickness and material shape the final look and feel of your bed.

I love how down duvets offer a luxurious, cloud-like comfort, which is perfect for colder climates. Cotton duvets provide a more breathable and lightweight option, ideal for warmer weather or those who prefer a cooler sleep. Consider your preferences and climate to make the right choice.

Once you've chosen your duvet, try your hands on various folding techniques. The classic double fold creates a clean and tailored look, while the hotel fold boasts a more relaxed and inviting feel.

For the double fold, simply fold the duvet in half lengthwise twice, then fold the top corners down to create a crisp edge. For the hotel fold, fold the duvet in thirds lengthwise, then fold the top third down twice, creating a stacked effect. Experiment with variations like tucking in the sides partially for a more casual touch.

You can also add a coverlet for an extra layer of texture, color, and pattern. This versatile piece allows you to transform your bed's look without changing the whole ensemble. Choose a lightweight linen coverlet for a summery vibe, a quilted one for added warmth and texture, or a patterned one to inject personality.

Ensure that the coverlet complements the duvet and overall color scheme of your bedroom.

How To Ace Pillow Arrangement

Pillows add a finishing touch to your bed, offering both comfort and personality. Whether you dream of a minimalist decor or a layered masterpiece, pillow arrangement is paramount.

So, let's explore the art of pillow placement for both queen and king-size beds:

Queen-Size Bed

Start with two sleeping pillows nestled against the headboard. Add two shams in a complementary color or pattern for instant style.

Then introduce two decorative pillows, one slightly larger than the other, both in contrasting textures or colors. Play with symmetry or asymmetry for a more relaxed look.

You can also incorporate a single, unique pillow with a bold color or pattern to inject your personality. Remember to keep the overall color scheme cohesive.

King-Size Bed

Begin with four standard sleeping pillows, two on each side, creating a sense of symmetry. Add four matching shams for a polished look.

You can experiment with layering by placing two decorative pillows of different sizes in front of each sleeping pillow, one behind the other. Mix textures and patterns for added visual interest.

(** WILL REMOVE ONCE INFOGRAPHIC IS FINALIZED am not sure what the infographic looks like that you are creating but I would like to mention, start with 3 Euro Shams in the back layered with 2 standards in front and possibly a decorative accent pillow OR 4 pillows, 2 on each side etc…. Like you mentioned in first paragraph. Does that make sense? I want to get the square 26” Euro shams in there because that is a strong alternative.)

If you crave a bolder approach with two large decorative pillows on each side, flanked by smaller ones in contrasting colors. This creates a luxurious, layered effect.

Layer Up Your Luxurious Bed

Texture is paramount if you want an inviting and visually captivating bed. It adds depth, dimension, and a touch of cozy luxury, inviting you to sink into your epitome of comfort.

But how exactly do you incorporate texture without creating a cluttered mess?

 Embracing the Power of Texture

Throws and throws blankets are your texture best friends. Choose a chunky knit throw for a rustic vibe, a woven cotton one for a more relaxed look, or a faux fur blanket for an undeniably luxurious touch.

I like to layer them at the foot of the bed or drape them casually across the corner, thereby, letting the texture speak for itself.

Accessorizing with Purpose

Woven baskets at the foot of the bed provide not only texture but also functional storage for extra pillows or throws. So don’t be afraid to play with size and shape for added visual interest.

For a unique touch, consider placing a decorative tray on the nightstand, holding a small vase with fresh flowers, or a stack of your favorite books.

Balancing Act

While texture elevates your bed styling, remember the art of balance. Too many elements can make your bed feel cluttered.

Start by adding one textured element at a time, like a faux fur throw at the foot, and observe the overall look. If it feels cohesive, add another layer, like a woven basket. This approach ensures a visually appealing and inviting space, not an overwhelming mishmash.

How To Maintain Your Stylish Bed Maintaining a stylish bed doesn't mean spending hours on daily fussing. Simple habits can ensure your bed stays looking its best:

Regular Washing: Wash your sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers regularly according to the fabric care instructions. This keeps your bed fresh, hygienic, and looking its best.

Fluff it Up: Take a moment each morning to fluff your pillows and smooth out your duvet. This creates a neat and inviting appearance, even if you're short on time.

Minor Adjustments: Throughout the week, make minor adjustments to your bed styling as needed. Straighten throw blankets, fluff stray pillows, and ensure everything is properly positioned. These small tweaks can significantly impact the overall look and feel of your bed.

Finishing Touches

Remember, a stylish bed isn't just about following trends; it's about creating a space that reflects your unique personality and preferences.

I always say, embrace your individuality by incorporating elements that resonate with you, be it a favorite throw blanket inherited from a family member, a decorative pillow showcasing your love for travel, or a stack of books representing your literary interests.

Let your bed be a story waiting to be told, reflecting your essence and bringing a sense of personal joy to your bedroom!
