Why August Is the Smartest Month to Plan Your Fall Home Refresh
A little planning now can make the rest of the year feel so much easier.
August always feels like a bit of a transition to me. We’re still enjoying summer, but I can already feel fall coming, and with it, dinners with friends, cooler evenings, holiday gatherings, and that familiar feeling of, How did we get here so quickly?
If you’ve been thinking about refreshing your home, August is actually one of my favorite times to start planning.
Not because I want you to rush through summer, but because a little planning now can make a big difference later.
Furniture Takes Time
This is one of the biggest things I remind clients about.
The beautiful sofa, dining table, custom chair, or special piece you have your eye on may not be sitting in a warehouse waiting for you. Furniture can have lead times, especially when you're ordering custom upholstery, selecting specific fabrics, or working with trade vendors.
If you want something new for fall entertaining, now is the time to start looking.
I would much rather have us thoughtfully choose the right piece in August than find ourselves scrambling in October because the perfect chair won't arrive until December.
Renovations Need a Little Breathing Room
Thinking about a kitchen update, bathroom refresh, new flooring, lighting, or another home improvement project?
August is a wonderful time to start the conversation.
Renovations involve more than choosing pretty finishes. There are measurements, selections, ordering, scheduling, contractors, deliveries, and all those little details that need to happen in the right order.
Planning ahead gives everyone room to do the job well.
And I always prefer that to making decisions under pressure.
Fall Is Entertaining Season
There is something about fall that makes us want to gather.
The weather cools down, everyone settles back into routines, and suddenly the dining table becomes the center of everything again.
If your home isn't quite working the way you'd like for entertaining, August is the perfect time to take a look.
Maybe you need more seating. Maybe your dining room lighting isn't quite right. Maybe your living room layout makes conversation difficult. Or perhaps you've been meaning to finally tackle that powder room you've been avoiding.
These are the kinds of changes that can make a home feel completely different when guests arrive.
Get Ahead of Holiday Stress
I know. We don't necessarily want to talk about the holidays in August!
But I promise, your future November self will thank you.
The holidays have a way of arriving all at once. If you know you're hosting Thanksgiving or having family stay with you, getting the home projects started now means you aren't trying to paint a room, order furniture, and find guest bedding at the same time you're buying presents and planning dinner.
A little foresight creates breathing room.
And breathing room is a beautiful thing.
Planning Can Actually Save Money
This one is important.
Planning ahead gives you time to compare options, make thoughtful selections, combine orders, and avoid those expensive last-minute decisions.
When we're rushing, we're much more likely to say, "Well, I guess this will do."
And I don't want that for my clients.
I'd rather spend a little more time finding the right piece, the right fabric, or the right finish than spend money twice because the first choice wasn't quite right.
Good design is rarely about rushing.
My August Checklist
If you're thinking about a fall home refresh, I'd start with a simple list:
✔ What isn't working in your home right now?
✔ What would make everyday life easier?
✔ Are you hosting this fall or during the holidays?
✔ Is there furniture you've been meaning to replace?
✔ Are there renovations you've been putting off?
✔ What needs to be ordered or scheduled ahead of time?
You don't have to do everything.
Sometimes identifying the one or two things that would make the biggest difference is enough to get started.
Because when fall arrives, wouldn't it be nice to simply enjoy your home instead of realizing there are twelve things you meant to get done?
That's my kind of fall refresh.
