Creative Ways to Style a Mirror in Your Home
Let’s talk about mirrors. I find them so interesting and have been thinking about all the unique ways we can use them around our homes.
Mirrors are one of those design elements people treat as purely practical — especially above vanities or tucked into hallways. Functional. Expected. Safe. But honestly? That’s where the opportunity is. Why not make it art?
Yes, mirrors reflect light (which is very helpful, especially in Bend during the darker months). But they also reflect mood. They bounce around architecture. They double the beauty of a great light fixture. They make a small powder bath feel intentional instead of forgotten.
Above a vanity, I love an unexpected shape — arched, oval, softly curved, even slightly asymmetrical. A sculptural frame can completely elevate a simple bathroom. And in a hallway? A mirror can act like a window where there isn’t one. It adds depth, movement, and just enough sparkle to keep things from feeling flat.
Sometimes I skip traditional art altogether and hang a beautiful vintage mirror instead. Especially one with patina — a little foxing, a worn gilt frame, something slightly imperfect. Perfection can feel a bit dull. A mirror with history feels layered and soulful.
Little design nugget:
If a room feels flat, add a mirror.
If a room feels dark, add a mirror.
If a room feels boring… definitely add a mirror, haha.
They’re also wonderful for reflecting something intentional — a piece of art across the room, a view, a favorite lamp. Placement matters. What the mirror sees is just as important as the mirror itself.
So yes, mirrors are practical.
But they’re also quietly transformative.
And now I’m wondering… do we need more interesting mirrors in the world?
I think we do. 💛
