How to Choose the Right Rug Size

Imagine this, you’re shopping online, sifting through different designs, price points and manufacturers…

Finally you find that golden sophisticated rug that would just bring that right amount of warmth and flair you’ve been holding out for.

So without a doubt you order it, by your slightly iffy estimations it should be okay, not a worry has passed your mind yet.

Until it arrives, and you realize you got it in an absurdly small size, or it’s so cumbersome and large that it begins to overpower your space.

This may sound like a stretch but I know one too many people who have been in this situation needlessly.

Today I’m going to save you the hassle so you can get the right sized rug of your dreams in no time at all!

Before shopping for a rug, it's very important to measure your space accurately to avoid mistakes or purchasing incorrectly.

First of all you’re going to have to use a measuring tape to determine the length and width of the area where you intend to place the wrong.

This is a non-negotiable and will save you so much disappointment later on! So please trust me and make that quick target run for a measuring tape.

Here are the perfect measurements for choosing a rug for various parts of the home.

•Living room.

Choose a rug that is large enough so that all the living room seating pieces and accent furniture fit entirely on the rug (if that’s the look you are going for).

Choose a rug to fit under the front legs of your large seating pieces. This ties the furniture together and keeps the room balanced.

If you have separate sitting areas, use this same approach and keep the rugs in the same color palette.

•Dining room

Rugs must be large enough so that the table can be centered on the rug and all dining chairs sit well within the perimeter even when pulled out.

A table for 8 or more fits best on a 9 × 12 or 10 × 4 rug.

A table for 6 fits best on an 8 × 10 and 6 × 9 rug.

A small table for 4 fits best on a 6 × 9 rug.

•King bed.

A 8 X 10 or 9 X 12 rug works best. The rug will sit almost completely under the bed and nightstands leaving a little space underfoot around the bed.

•Queen bed.

A 8X10 rug covers a queen bed and high stands with 3 of the rug on either side of the bed while a 6 × 9 rug gives an 18 border on each side.

•Twin bed

An 8 × 10, 6 × 9, and 5 × 7 rug fits all nicely under a twin bed leaving ample room around the border.

Two 3 × 5 or smaller rugs also work well on either side of the bed.

Selecting the right and accurate size of rug helps improve the overall beauty of your space.

By measuring your space, considering the purpose of the room, choosing an appropriate shape, and keeping your personal style of a room in mind, you are able to pick the absolute best rug for your space.

The right rug makes all the difference in making your space more elegant and inviting.
