Best Fabrics for Airy and Cool Interiors This Summer

Every summer, I notice the same thing happening in my home. I naturally start craving lighter layers, softer textures, and spaces that simply breathe better for the season.

Winter is about coziness and weight, while summer is about ease.

One of the simplest ways to shift the feeling of your home seasonally is through fabric. You don’t need a full redesign to make a room feel fresh again. Sometimes swapping heavy textiles for airy, more natural fibers completely changes the mood.

Here are the fabrics I find myself reaching for most during the warmer months and why they work so beautifully in summer homes, especially here in Bend, Oregon.

Linen: Relaxed, Breathable, Timeless

If I had to pick one fabric that defines summer for me, it would be linen.

I love that it looks slightly undone in the best possible way. Linen doesn’t try too hard. It wrinkles, softens over time, and instantly makes a room feel relaxed and lived in.

In bedrooms, I especially love natural linen bedding paired with seasonal organic crinkle cotton sheets. They feel cool against the skin during warm evenings and layer beautifully when the nights cool down again, which, if you live in Central Oregon, you know happens quickly.

What makes linen timeless is that it never really goes out of style. It works equally well in modern homes, mountain homes, and older character homes. It has a quiet ease to it.

Cotton: Soft, Practical, and Easy to Live With

Cotton is one of those fabrics that always earns its place.

For summer, I lean toward lighter-weight cottons with texture — washed cotton, gentle patterns, gauzy weaves, crinkle finishes, and soft stripes. They bring comfort without heaviness.

I often encourage clients to swap out heavier winter bedding, throws, and pillow covers seasonally. A simple cotton throw folded over a chair or bed instantly lightens the room visually.

And practically speaking, cotton is easy. Washable, durable, unfussy, and real-life friendly.

Performance Fabrics: Beautiful and Livable

Performance textiles have come a long way.

Years ago, “performance fabric” usually meant stiff or overly synthetic-feeling. Now there are beautiful options that look soft and natural while still standing up to dogs, kids, spills, and summer entertaining.

In Bend, especially, where homes are often filled with muddy paws, sunscreen, river towels, and guests drifting in and out, I use performance fabrics constantly.

The goal is always the same:

A home that looks beautiful but still lets people fully relax in it.

Creating a Home That Feels Like Summer

Summer design doesn’t need to be dramatic to feel transformative.

A few thoughtful fabric swaps, lighter bedding, and breathable textures can completely shift how your home feels day to day.

I also think layering is what keeps summer interiors from feeling flat. Linen paired with cotton, woven textures against natural woods, soft bedding mixed with ceramics or baskets — those subtle combinations are what make a space feel inviting and lived in.

The best summer homes aren’t overly styled. They simply feel easy to live in. And honestly, I think that’s what good design should do year-round.
