How to Make Your Home Feel Like a Summer Retreat in Central Oregon
One of the things I love most about living in Bend is how naturally life flows outdoors in the summer.
The minute the weather warms up, patios become dining rooms, porches turn into morning coffee spots, and evenings seem to stretch on forever around a fire pit. There’s a relaxed rhythm to summer in Central Oregon that I always want homes to reflect.
Creating that “summer retreat” feeling at home doesn’t require a massive renovation. It’s usually the smaller shifts—comfortable seating, layered textures, good lighting, greenery—that make outdoor spaces feel welcoming and lived in.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to create an easy, relaxed summer atmosphere at home.
Create Comfortable Outdoor Seating People Actually Want to Use
This sounds obvious, but it matters.
I see so many outdoor spaces with furniture that looks beautiful… but no one actually wants to sit in it for more than ten minutes.
Comfort changes everything.
I always recommend:
Deep seating
Performance cushions
Soft outdoor throws
Flexible seating that can move around easily for gatherings
In Bend, our evenings cool down quickly even after warm days, so layered comfort is key.
And personally, I think outdoor spaces should feel a little collected—not too matching or overly staged.
Fire Pits Are the Heart of Summer
If there’s one outdoor feature that immediately creates atmosphere, it’s a fire pit.
It becomes the gathering place naturally—morning coffee, late-night conversations, kids roasting marshmallows, friends lingering longer than planned.
I love designing outdoor areas around that central feeling of connection rather than just arranging furniture against a wall.
Even a small portable fire feature can completely transform a patio.
Think About Hosting, Even Casually
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that people gather where things feel easy.
Outdoor entertaining doesn’t need to feel elaborate to feel beautiful.
A few things I always think about:
Is there enough soft lighting?
Can guests easily move around?
Is there somewhere to set down a drink?
Are blankets nearby when the temperature drops?
Sometimes the smallest details are what make people stay longer and feel comfortable.
Blend Naturals Between Indoors and Outdoors
The most beautiful summer homes feel connected to their surroundings.
I love when indoor and outdoor spaces “talk” to each other through:
Similar color palettes
Repeating textures
Natural materials
Large open doors
Consistent lighting tones
Natural wood
Floral accents
I tend to keep palettes fairly quiet outdoors and let the materials do the work.
A slightly organic feeling always ages better than anything overly trendy.
Especially in Central Oregon, where the landscape is such a huge part of daily life, homes feel best when they embrace that connection instead of separating from it.
And really, that’s what summer in Bend is all about.
